Slick’s Nit-Picks: Piranha 3D
by Handel on Aug.25, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
Before I really get into this review I have to let off some steam. Nothing against this movie at all really but it’s a shame that films like this can do well while really good ones like Scott Pilgrim are on life support, in terms of box office numbers. That is an argument for a different article but I had to put it out there. The other thing is that if you needed any further proof that 3D is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of a gimmick then you really need to see this movie. When the highlight of your 3D effects is a digitally rendered, dismembered penis being torn apart, eaten and burped up to float out at the audience, well…that one pretty much speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

Ant’s Rant:Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Movie Review
by Ant on Aug.16, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies

Finally the movie adaptation to the cult graphic novel hit is here to rock our socks off. Releasing just in time to finish off the summer along with The Expendables, will this film be worth the tokens required to play, or will it be KO’ed by the new challenger? How will this hold up as an adaptation for a graphic novel that’s essentially an action-packed gamer’s wet dream? Click through for my take on the product of awkward Michael Cera and the crew behind the British zombie hit Shaun of the Dead.
Slick’s Nit-Picks: Inception
by Handel on Jul.27, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
Good news everyone, Inception is a fresh idea in the festering sea of remade and recycled garbage that we call the 2010 movie season. The not so great news is that it does not live up to its hype. Now there are those who will say “Oh you didn’t like it because you didn’t understand the depth and complexity of what was going on.” Those people should be summarily slapped in the mouth by the dead hand of Rick James. Inception is a good movie; it is not a great movie. It is very straightforward in what it wants to accomplish, but it runs into a lot of problems in its execution.
Slick’s Nit-Picks: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
by Handel on Jul.24, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
Ah, remakes…you all know how I feel about remakes. But my mother asked to see this movie as part of her birthday celebration so it was inevitable that this was one I would put money on. Let’s not forget that this particular remake is based on part of the 1940 classic, Fantasia. However ridiculous that sounds, One should not count out The Sorcerer’s Apprentice as it is a very enjoyable film, especially for family viewing. While I wouldn’t call it a buddy movie, Disney manages a relatively solid film by pairing Nic Cage and Jay Baruchel. (continue reading…)
Slick’s Nit-Picks: Salt
by Handel on Jul.23, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
God was listening to me rage last night and gave me a real birthday present – Hollywood seems to have remembered those two pieces of genitalia that had long since receded back inside itself. Let’s just hope the dangling trend continues. Evelyn Salt is hot – I’m not even talking about the perpetual boner Angelina Jolie has been giving me since Hackers, this character is a woman to watch. Imagine Tomb Raider…if it hadn’t sucked. Now imagine Tomb Raider if it were an awesome movie, throw in some Jason Bourne and a tinge of Daniel Craig’s Bond and you have Evelyn Salt. If she were a man, she’d be capable of withstanding worse torture than Bond did in Casino Royale (any man, straight or not, knows what I mean). If she were a machine, both the T-1000 and the T-X would be her little bitches and she’d be wearing John Connor’s skull around her neck like Flavor Flav wears clocks. You never, ever want to be on this chick’s bad side and that fact made for a very good action-based drama. (continue reading…)
Ant’s Rant: Predators

Tonight, I watched Predator for the first time in a couple of years. I forgot that it wasn’t just a meat head action movie. It was a mystery film action movie with a perfect amount of pacing. The first thing you see is something fly past Earth and something drop out of it towards Earth. A safe bet would be that something alien came to Earth. Immediately after that we get a light-hearted entrance into a very human scenario which is very Rambo like. This goes on for a good deal of time while we learn about the human characters and see that something horrible is happening. You almost forget that glimpse of something alien in the beginning and become drawn into the mystery of the horrors. You don’t even see the alien monster that is hunting our main characters one by one until 3/4 of the way through, and from then on its go time and you don’t get enough of the alien’s in your face killing spree.
Wolfman (2010) Movie/Blu-Ray Review
by Rich on Jun.09, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
Directed By: Joe Johnston
Lawrence Talbot – Benicio Del Toro

Sir John Talbot – Anthony Hopkins

Gwen Conliffe – Emily Blunt

Inspector Abberline- Hugo Weaving

“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright.”
This quote has been synonymous with the Wolfman since the legendary Lon Chaney brought this iconic universal monster to life. As a horror movie buff I have always tried to see all the classics and the Wolfman has always been my favorite. While Frankenstein was a trajic tale and Dracula was evil personified to me the Wolfman was more of a guy at the wrong place at the wrong time and was cursed for it. This newest incarnation of the Wolfman maintained that aspect and added a bit more depth as well.
Story:
Much like the iconic 1941 classic this version follows Lawrence Talbot(Del Toro) who is returning home to investigate the death of his brother at the request of his wife (Blunt). Reunited with his estranged and distant father (Hopkins), Lawrence proceeds to start his investigation and along the way sort out his demons as well which are crucial to the story. His investigation leads him to a gypsy camp where a gypsy mystic informs him that an evil force was responsible for his brother’s death. It is here where are given a glimpse of the wolf which proceeds to slaughter everyone in the gypsy camp and of course bites Talbot.
After Talbot’s attack and miraculos recovery we are introduced to Abberline ( Weaving) who is an inspector for Scotland Yard and is trying to uncover the mystery to all these murders. Abberline suspects Talbot’s involvement given his past which I won’t spoil and proceeds to have him arrested after his first transformation. After the first transformation is when the film goes from remake to establishing itself as a reimagining and does a fine job with genuine thrills and some real graphic kills.
Slick’s Nit-Picks: Kick-Ass
by Handel on Apr.18, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies, Upcoming Movie News
Oh no, here we go with another comic book movie. Wait a minute, it’s not about any established Marvel or DC character and it is not a remake (about the first no-remake this year); maybe this one has hope. In fact, it has way more than hope—Kick-Ass does exactly what its title suggests. The premise is beyond simple: just about every kid pretended to be a superhero as a kid and plenty of adults wish they could do something about the things they see on the news and in the streets. Kick-Ass is about an ordinary high school kid who has no special powers and has no money for cool Batman gadgets who decides to make a difference. By himself he is not going to accomplish much and he realized that: enter Red Mist, Big Daddy and Hit Girl, who round out our cast of vigilantes. Obviously I am going to tell you why, but you need to see this flick. You shouldn’t even be reading this…you should be out watching this movie—go…NOW!
