1st Impression: The Town

When I first heard about this movie I said to myself “another Bah-ston crime flick” trying to capture the magic of the Departed. But after seeing this trailer I feel this movie has the star power to stand on its own two feet. It feels less like the Departed and more like Heat. Jon Hamm and Ben Affleck have the potential to make this movie bad ass. Have a look at the trailer and decide for yourselves
Slick’s Nit-Picks: Piranha 3D
by Handel on Aug.25, 2010, under Movie Reviews, Movies
Before I really get into this review I have to let off some steam. Nothing against this movie at all really but it’s a shame that films like this can do well while really good ones like Scott Pilgrim are on life support, in terms of box office numbers. That is an argument for a different article but I had to put it out there. The other thing is that if you needed any further proof that 3D is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of a gimmick then you really need to see this movie. When the highlight of your 3D effects is a digitally rendered, dismembered penis being torn apart, eaten and burped up to float out at the audience, well…that one pretty much speaks for itself, doesn’t it?
1st Impression: My Soul To Take

Can it be? A horror movie that is rated-R and seems interesting. We might have a winner a folks with the exception of the damn 3-D
1st Impression: Case 39

I am not one to watch flicks with Renee Zellweger simply because I think she sucks. In my opinion her best role was in Jerry McGuire, but it seems that she is shedding the rom-com image and trying out new projects. I was pleasantly surprised at how the plot unfolded in this trailer and it actually succeeded in gaining my attention. Now as long as we get no Hugh Grant cameos we should be all good.

Ant’s Rant:Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Movie Review

Finally the movie adaptation to the cult graphic novel hit is here to rock our socks off. Releasing just in time to finish off the summer along with The Expendables, will this film be worth the tokens required to play, or will it be KO’ed by the new challenger? How will this hold up as an adaptation for a graphic novel that’s essentially an action-packed gamer’s wet dream? Click through for my take on the product of awkward Michael Cera and the crew behind the British zombie hit Shaun of the Dead.
Seems they are not so “Expendable”
by Handel on Aug.16, 2010, under Editorials,Columns and Features, Movies
I say it over and over again that there is no hope for Hollywood when all that comes out are remakes and anything that represents even a mild amount of creativity is stifled. This was a big opening weekend and the above has been proven once more. He can beat seven evil exes but Scott Pilgrim could not touch the Expendables (I guess they all are vegan and stuck to the diet). Stallone’s action romp is a smashup and homage to pretty much all the films the cast has done over the past three decades and that formula grossed thirty-five million over the weekend. This was one remake I did not truly mind because the film is not taking itself seriously and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun to watch (I’ll know for sure soon). The fact remains that remake is killing creativity because Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (which I have seen) only grossed ten and a half million this weekend. I can only hope the buzz about how great this film was makes it really pick up steam during the week and into next weekend. This film does not deserve to bomb and it really needs to do well to open the door for more films like it to follow. Stay tuned to My Take Radio for Ant’s review of Scott Pilgrim and Rich’s review of The Expendables.

Slick’s Quick Hits: I Spit On Your Grave

Now this one I think I will like. You have seen plenty of movies where the girl gets kidnapped and is either raped or killed or sold into prostitution and you just hope somebody comes to save here. What if she just … I don’t know, SNAPS?
Who’s gonna save the sorry bastards that violated her? My vote is for nobody.
Slick’s Quick Hits: Skyline

Saw this trailer while I was waiting for Scott Pilgrim to start. The effects look great but I fear this movie will suck eight flavors of frog ass. When your promo tells me that I should turn to the guy that was doing autotune before it got big for all matters regarding alien life because giant alien vacuum cleaners may come to Earth, I just can’t be excited for your film.

I guess Speed and Speed 2 weren’t enough, now we have a train version. But wait, this one is based upon true events! And it has DENZEL!
Guess what? Still not impressed. I love me some Rosario Dawson but she has too much clothing on.
